Count how many hair products are on your vanity. In my case, I have around five face ampoules and exactly one scalp product and even that one only showed up after a hair stylist diagnosed me with a dry scalp. Turns out that was the reason so much hair was coming out every time I blow-dried. 

What actually got to me after the diagnosis was one question: your scalp is the same skin as your face, so why does skincare get all the effort while scalp and hair get none? Scalp is dry or oily, same as your face, and the right products depend on which one you are.

Quick check:

Notice what your scalp is usually doing by afternoon.

• Slight oily film on your fingers, roots looking flat and shiny → oily scalp

• A little tight or itchy, maybe some light flaking → dry scalp

   

Or just go with your face skin type! Scalp usually follows the same pattern.

I'm dry scalp, a bit itchy, some flaking on bad weeks, and it turns out I'd been losing more hair than I realized on wash days. I used an anti-hair-loss spray before this one, and the issue was that it landed more on the hair than the scalp, so I ended up with greasy strands and not much actual benefit.
