Who does not know Hyaluronic acid and its benefits for our skin and body? If you are a fan of korean skincare products, go and check the ingredients list of your favorite serum. You will most probably find HA in the list. But what is this over popular ingredient and why is it so important for us?

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is the molecule that we are born with and it is naturally found in connective tissues of our body, eyes and even in joints. Hyaluronic Acid molecules hold the moisture 1000 times bigger than its weight in the tissues and keep it well lubricated and protected.

As a humectant ingredient, Hyaluronic acid is used in the skin care products for only one main reason - moisture and skin hydration. Hyaluronic acid is also closely related to natural collagen production and skin firmness, which helps to maintain plump and firm skin.

As we age, the natural production of HA molecules in our body decreases, leading to increased skin dehydration and loss of elasticity.

What are the benefits of Hyaluronic Acid?

  • Moisture and Hydration. As we said before, HA molecules attract water and hold the moisture for a long time, helding to deal with increased dehydration and dryness.

  • Increases skin elasticity. As it is closely related to collagen, HA helps to increase skin elasticity and to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  • Healing and repair. HA molecules help to reduce inflammations and irritations of the skin, helping to speed up healing processes of acne and other damaged areas.

Types of Hyaluronic Acid in skincare

  • Sodium hyaluronate - derivative of HA obtained from salt, which has similar properties as hyaluronic acid. Sodium Hyaluronate molecules are smaller compared to HA molecules meaning they are able to penetrate deeper levels of our epidermis.

  • Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid  - is an artificially divided molecule of Hyaluronic acid, which results in small-sized molecules that penetrate deep levels of the skin. Compared to the HA and SH molecules, hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid provides less moisture.

  • Sodium acetylated hyaluronate is a variation of SH, where some molecules were replaced with acetyl group molecules that have even higher moisture retention abilities.

  • Sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer - an enhanced version of SH molecules, where it is artificially attached to a polymer matrix, which increases its moisture retention abilities as well as skin protection.

Hyaluronic acid based skincare line is a must-have if you have dehydrated skin. Products are infused with multiple types of Hyaluronic acid, which gives an intensive moisturizing care.
