[INGREDIENT 101] Diving into the sun protection: Physical VS Chemical sunscreen agent difference
  Writer : Stylekorean      Date : 2022-04-13 14:00:00     View : 6069

Sun protection has become an enormous part of our skincare routine, but many of us still have a lot of questions about the difference between physical and chemical sunscreen agents. That is why we are here today to help you categorize the two and choose the best option for your skin.

Physical sunscreen

Physical or Mineral sunscreen agents work as “skin barriers” or shields reflecting the UV-rays right after application. The most common mineral filters are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. Physical filters can usually leave a light white cast on the skin that needs time to adjust.

Some of the PROs of physical filters:

  - Are effective right after application

  - Less likely to cause irritation and are suitable for highly sensitive skin

  - Safe for babies and during pregnancy

But, as every product does, physical sun blocks do have a few cons as well:

  - Usually leave a white cast and might be heavy

  - Need to be re-applied every 2-3 hours and even more frequently during outdoor activities

Chemical sunscreen

Chemical or Organic sunscreen agents are based on the components that penetrate the skin and absorb the UV-rays, transforming them into heat. Since chemical agents need time to sink into the skin, it is highly advisable to apply them approximately 20-30 minutes before going outside or being exposed to the sunlight.

PROs of chemical agents are:

  - Usually have light lotion-like texture and are more suitable for oily skin

  - More water- and sweat- resistant

  - Protect the skin from premature aging

As for CONs:

  - Need time to activate - best to apply 20-30 minutes before going out

  - Can cause irritation on highly sensitive skin

Here are a few of the sunscreens that are worth trying:

 - TOCOBO Bit Watery Sun Cream SPF50+ PA++++

Is a light chemical sunscreen that has serum-like texture with slight dewy finish. It contains a Hyaluronic Acid that will help with deep hydration and moisture.

 - Benton Airy Fit UV Defense Sun Cream SOF50+/PA++++

Light watery chemical sunscreen that contains a calming Centella Asiatica complex. It will not only provide a highly effective sun protection, but also help to calm and soothe the skin.

 - AXIS-Y Complete Non-stress Physical Sunscreen

Physical sunscreen based on calming Mugwort extract and Niacinamide, which will help to brighten and even the skin tone.

 - Heimish Bulgarian Rose Tone-Up Sunscreen

2-in-1 cream that combines an effective UV protection and tone-up cream. It contains Bulgarian rose water that will help with redness and has an anti-aging properties.

No matter what sunscreen agent you chose, the most important factor is that you use it daily regardless the season. Stay with us to see more interesting articles and beauty notes in our K-Beauty journal <3
